After deciding on a topic with your supervisor, you should elaborate the topic and find out whether it will produce interesting research.

To this end you should find and get an overview of the existing literature on the topic (look at Google and ResearchIndex), and detail the short description of the topic to get an idea of its contribution and feasibility.

A thesis proposal should consist of the following ingredients:

   * Context
      * Description of the problem
      * Discussion of literature
   * Research questions
      * Contribution
   * Approach
      * Methods and techniques to be used
   * Expected results
      * Deliverables
   * Planning
      * What will be finished when?
   * Bibliography

A good thesis proposal will serve as a good starting point for writing your thesis.
