Abstract
Nowadays, every self-respecting enterprise has its own website on the
internet. Whilst some sites solely serve the purpose of providing
information, others offer advanced functionality like online banking or
shopping. Especially the latter category of websites often combine
several different services into a single screen. Traditional techniques
to do this, like frames, are more and more being replaced by so-called
portals. Using portals, information coming from different sources,
either local or remote, can be aggregated into a single
webpage before the webpage is sent to the client. This offers
significant improvements in security, performance and availability.
This report discusses the JSR 168 standard for portal programming, and
shows how portal technology can be combined with other existing
technologies often used to create web applications.
