Title: The Rosetta Machine Translation System
Abstract
In this presentation I will first explain the method of automatic translation used
in the Rosetta project (compositional translation) and illustrate it using simple
examples. I will then show that this method is a very powerful method to deal with a
variety of translation problems. I will give a global sketch of the Rosetta3
research prototype that translates between Dutch, English and Spanish. I will
continue by discussing the variety of formal high-level languages developed to
notate linguistic and translational knowledge (rules of grammar, lexicons, etc.)
that are compiled into a standard programming language (Pascal). Finally, I will
discuss the current status of the Rosetta system.
