Title: Evaluating the performance of web applications
Abstract
In the past decade there has been an enormous increase in e-business. As a
side effect of this, the amount of web applications being developed is
growing rapidly. In the process of testing whether a web application meets
its requirements, often only the functional behavior is verified. People
tend to forget that performance behavior is just as important as functional
behavior when it comes to quality of service. Because of the tendency to
ignore performance requirements, many post-production issues are related to
performance. Sometimes performance is evaluated, but then it is often done
in an ad hoc and inadequate manner. This thesis narrows the gap between
theory and practice. It shows how the basics of queueing theory, scheduling
and discrete event simulation can be used to explain and to a certain
extent even predict performance behavior. Based on the insights obtained,
improvements to the performance evaluation process are suggested.
