Title: Empirical Research within Software Engineering

Abstract

For my thesis work I analyze large collections of Helium programs collected by the `Big Brother'-logger facility of the compiler. In science this kind of work falls in the category of empirical research and is useful to prove or to disprove a claim. By my thesis work I got a broader understanding about doing empirical research and its relevance, which I will discuss.

In my talk I give an introduction in doing empirical research focusing on software engineering. Furthermore some useful methods will be discussed in depth which are typically useful and relative straightforward to apply.
