- Utrecht University uses a system of positions called FLOW
(functies, loopbanen en waardering).
- FLOW applies to all researchers and lecturers.
- The highest position is that of hoogleraar (full professor).
- Below that, positions are divided in three areas of expertise
research, education and research/education;
in each area there are three levels:
UHD, UD en junior.
- PhD students have the rank of AIO (trainee researcher),
- The table below contains an overview of the various positions.
Listed are the FLOW position names, and also (in

The levels UHD en UD require a certain qualification.
- For lecturers and researchers lacking the
proper qualifications, a custom program is draw up,
aimed at obtaining the required qualification.
- An appointment at junior level as lecturer or
lecturer/researcher should lead to a base
qualification education.
- Getting a qualification does not automatically lead to a higher position;
unless an agreement was made otherwise and separately, one has
to apply for an open position.
- For more details see
informatie over de FLOW kwalificaties (sorry, in dutch).
- A postdoc is generally appointed temporarily.
The base qualification research (PhD) is required.
- A scientific programmer ("wetenschappelijk programmeur")
is appointed as researcher on junior level.
The base qualification research is not required.
