Municipalities and
Business Intelligence |
S.Beute@solviteers.nl |

|
In times of cutbacks, municipalities, are more
than ever focused on spending budgets. Simultaneously, different tasks are
transferred from the Government to municipalities who, in turn, must perform
these tasks as well as possible. In order for the municipalities to be able to monitor the efficiency and
effectiveness of these tasks, the availability of a uniform Business
Intelligence (BI) is important. Many municipalities have access to the tools
needed to open and generate BI but don’t use them optimally because they do
not know exactly what it is that they want to measure. Tasks performed by municipalities correspond with one an other. Therefore it seems possible to develop a
standard set of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) that every municipality can
work with. We want to help municipalities with an exchange platform (BI
community), based on this set of standard KPIs. Through this platform, the
KPIs can be shared and updated. Moreover, through this platform, BI Tools and
components can be shared with which the information can be extracted from the
data sources. Assignment Develop, in consultation with a number of municipalities (the
participants), a basic set of KPIs. Ensure that there is sufficient support
among the participants for this basic set. Realize, together with the
participants, a BI
community with the basic KPIs. |

Switching Service

|
Transition to a new service provider is a critical first step in the
execution of every IT (applications and/or infrastructure) outsourcing
contract. The complexity of a transition varies from project to project and
usually depends on many factors including attributes that define the current
and target state (which may include the move to alternative delivery models
such as cloud services). Successful transitions require careful planning and need insight into
the factors that lead to success. We are interested in investigating further
the styles and types of relationships required to be successful as well as
the impact of the clients IT landscape on the duration and costs of the
transition. Multiple real life case studies should be used to support
conclusions and reflect the critical success factors for effective
transitions. |

Multi-tenancy: When
to Switch |
Jaap Kabbedijk |
Centric |

|
|
Business software is more and more moving from the traditional
on-premises deployment model to a SaaS deployment
model. First software was developed and potentially customized after which it
was sent to a customer to be deployed on-site. Now software is developed and
deployed at the software vendor (or service provider). Finding the
appropriate deployment method and level of resource sharing is crucial for a
software vendor. This deployment method can vary between an ASP solution, a SaaS solution and everything in between. Choosing the
right deployment model depends on the number of customers using a specific
product and the level of functionality that is shared between all different
customers. The ultimate deployment model in which
all different customers share the same software instance and database(s), is
called multi-tenancy. Centric has around 200 products all with a different architecture,
customer base and domain and are looking for a method or set of guidelines
that help software companies to determine whether a multi-tenant solution is
feasible for a software product. The project will be partially performed at
Utrecht University and partially at Centric. Please contact Jaap Kabbedijk

A repeated survey among
end users of hospital information systems |
Ronald Batenburg |
UMCU |
1-12-2013 |
|
|
Just after the summer of 2011, the Utrecht University Medical Centre
(UMCU) has deployed a new hospital information system. This deployment and replacement
of the old hospital information system has been a very large migration and
implementation trajectory, including a program of many projects. One such
project is the monitoring of user satisfaction and user involvement of
end-users, i.e. medical staff (doctors and nurses) and supportive staff. In
April 2011, a first survey was sent out (before the launch of the new
hospital information system) among all end-users, and in October 2011 a
second survey. Responses were 1,000 completed questionnaires on both surveys.
At least three more waves of user surveys are planned for 2011 and 2012. As of now, there is a position for an MBI or CKE master student to
participate in this project. Analysing the survey
data from different theoretical perspectives, conducting additional
interviews, and preparing the next waves of user surveys are the main
activities for a potential thesis project. If satisfactory, a paid (and/or
PhD) position after the thesis period at UMCU is possible. Interested students are invited to contact Ronald Batenburg
at r.s.batenburg@uu.nl directly. As the survey materials and the new survey
waves to be developed are in Dutch, Dutch speaking
students are preferred. |

Visualizing
In-the-Field Software Operation in SOK Dashboards |
Henk van der Schuur |

Nowadays, most software vendors are leveraging sophisticated techniques
for acquisition and mining of software operation data. However, many vendors
are confronted with the challenge to present such data in a meaningful and
valuable manner. Although many visualization techniques and methods exist, it
is yet unidentified which techniques are particularly meaningful and valuable
for usage in software processes such as software architecture innovation and
software product management. This graduation research entails researching
existing visualization techniques, as well as identification of which
techniques are considered valuable in aforementioned processes. A data mining infrastructure, as well as recent operation
data, will be provided by AFAS Software. |

Towards the
Elimination of Error Dialogs |
Henk van der Schuur |
AFAS |

|
As a result of in-the-field software failures and crashes, error dialogs
are presented to end-users frequently. Although the experience of an
(unhandled) in-the-field software failure has been alleviated to certain
extent through error reporting techniques, an interesting question is wether or not end-users should be confronted with error
dialogs at all. This graduation research entails researching techniques for
elimination of error dialogs, as well as identification of alternative
failure handling techniques that do handle the software failures in a useful
manner, but at the same time ensure that the end-user is not confronted with
frustrating error messages. |

The effect of

It is a popular statement that self organizing
teams are more effective, searching in literature however we haven't found
any thorough proof of this statement. In this research we would let two
relatively small teams implement the same functionality, one team with a
preconfigured development setup that allows little or no customization,
another team with a totally free setup. Goals: - Verify if a free team has a significantly higher productivity than a
chained team. - Monitor the productivity over time and compare the chained and free
team. (More information: Kris Geusebroek,

Application life
cycle |
Kris Geusebroek |

During the life cycle of an application its characteristics change.
Metrics like cyclomatic complexity, number of classes,
number of methods, test coverage change over time. In this assignment you
will look at how the nature of these changes differs between applications and
if it is possible to predict the life of a given application based on the
changes in the beginning. Eventually the application becomes unmaintainable,
meaning that maintaining the application for the foreseeable future is more
expensive than rebuilding it from scratch. We would like to verify that: - Depending on the culture around development and the nature of the
problem the changes are different - We can identify a number of classes of life cycles - It is possible to predict when an application will become
unmaintainable based on measured changes in its metrics. (More information: Kris Geusebroek,

Celcus would like to offer you the opportunity to
complete your graduation project at our company. We are experts in the field
of IT & business, just like you. We usually operate in the ‘office of the
CFO’ to understand the ‘insight’ business question at hand and use our
technical knowledge to create solutions: provide the required insight in a
reliable and timely manner. Celcus has a few
qualities that make us unique in the market and enable us to successfully
pursue our mission: increase the accessibility to business intelligence/
corporate performance management. We increase accessibility through low cost,
swift implementation and low maintenance. We focus primarily on in-memory multidimensional database technology.
BI technology that offers the most business value. It is our goal to become a
centre of excellence in this field. Besides the use
of third party software like open source vendor Jedox
Palo and IBM TM1, Celcus offers its own innovative
software based on this technology. One of the unique features of Celcus is its ability to automate mission-critical decision making Excel applications to mature BI solutions.
Senior and junior consultants work together on each and every project
allowing for efficient and effective projects for our customers as well as
optimizing the transfer of experience and knowledge. We are looking for ambitious students that appreciate our mission and
area of expertise. We have several opportunities for graduation projects. We
are looking for a student to design a generic CPM application to manage a
portfolio of projects. Typically a solution fit for a Project Management
Office (PMO). A similar project on offer is to complete the design of a
generic Planning & Control solution for municipalities in the

Adaptive autonomy in Unmanned Ground Vehicles (UGVs) |
peter-paul.vanmaanen@tno.nl |
TNO |
1-12-2012 |
|
|
[sorry for Dutch!]
in player/stage
(http://playerstage.sourceforge.net/). Players/stage
Verder
bijpassende studie (artificial intelligence, information
science, computer science,
etc.), loon: 440 euro/maand +room allowance |

Social Media |

|
|
(MBI/CKE) Social Media is a relative new development with not much academic research so far. The product lifecycle of Social Media services (like Twitter, Facebook) are not known yet. New services will pop up and future developments have to be looked into. How will customers use social media in the future? What kind of possible advantages are available to AEGON? And other customer-driven questions have to be answered. Also from a governance perspective are several questions in need of an answer. What is the definition of Social Media (IT) Governance? How does the decision making process on Social Media looks like? What IT Governance processes are needed to support IT Governance? Is it possible to define maturity levels for Social Media Governance? Requires Social Media a different kind of business-IT alignment? These questions will be addressed during this Master Thesis, and will be focussed upon the AEGON environment. Previous research about IT Governance at University Utrecht has already produced conceptual frameworks on sustainability, innovation and compliance. The Master Thesis is a follow up of this research. Also other research in the area of Social Media is available. Research questions: 1. What is the development of Social Media services (not focussed on current products like Twitter, Linkedin, but long term focus)? 2. what is the possible impact of this development on the customers and on AEGON? 3. in what way should Social Media be governed? what is the decision making process on Social Media? How does this fit within AEGON? 4. what is the business-IT alignment for Social Media? 5. are changes needed within AEGON IT to support social media?

(MBI/CKE) one2many, the world’s leading Cell Broadcast (CB) company (www.one2many.eu) is keen to explore the opportunities of usage of CB technology in new business cases. Currently our systems are predominantly sold to mobile operators on a project base, followed by recurring support income. Typical use cases are location based Public Warning to your mobile (e.g. NL-Alert which will be launched this year in the Netherlands, rocket alerts in Israel and general Public warning in the USA) and broadcasting of Dynamic Discounts to mobile users as part of a dynamic tariff plan (very successful in highly competitive markets with high percentage of pre-paid users like Africa and Asia).
We however want to explore the opportunities of using CB technology in new use cases, for example in location-dependent social media applications and with different earn-back models, e.g. based on revenue sharing. With which parties should we partner to do so? And how do we ensure that mobile operators will be participating as their mobile networks are vital? Are you a creative out-of-the-box thinker, with an appetite for technology and feeling for business? Are you a keen user of social media? Then you’re warmly invited to help us to explore the new world of possibilities of location based mobile communication! Please contact Maarten Mes at One2Many by phone.

Sustainability |
Nico Brand |
Achmea |
1-2-2013 |
|
|
(MBI/CKE) Sustainability is becoming more and more important within organisations. Not only the image factor is important, also sustainability is becoming mandatory for suppliers and will become one of the criteria in a procurement process.
IT is responsible for a part of the total sustainability factor of a company. The Master Thesis research is focussed upon in what way the IT sustainability factor can be quantified and how the governance of IT organisation should deal with sustainability.
Previous research about IT Governance and sustainability (by G. Kormaris MSc) has produced changes in IT Governance models and a framework how IT Governance and sustainability can come together. The Master Thesis is a follow up of this research.
Achmea Achmea is one of the largest insurance companies in the Netherlands. Within Achmea sustainability is one of the drivers for the future. Several initiatives are already in progress. Achmea IT is doing research on sustainability at the IT infrastructure level. Part of this research is how sustainability can become part of the IT balanced scorecard. The major factor till now is based upon the CO2 footprint.
Achmea expects that sustainability will become a differentiator in their sales process, and will become an integral part of management accounting.
Research questions:
The Master Thesis will expand the current Achmea research to more business related levels. Research questions that will be addressed: - what IT governance instruments are necessary to govern IT sustainability? How can IT sustainability be aligned with the business? - how can the IT sustainability factor be explained? Are besides CO2 footprint other sustainability elements applicable (like C2C)? - how can performance management be expanded with the IT sustainability factor? On which levels within an IT organisation is this applicable? |

studenten Informatica. Kennis van component based development, objectgeoriënteerd
ontwerpen, programmeren en JEE is een pré. |

Performancepatronen |

Quinity |

|
|
We
(COTS - Custom off the shelf).
technologie gebruiken we Java/J2EE, Soap/Webservices,
XML/XSLT, WebSphere/Tomcat

Company: QBTEC Location: Woerden Project: Full-time bachelor project Start project: As soon as possible Have you ever considered the job of employees in snack corners? How to enable them to prepare high quality fries and snack each time? QBTEC is looking for a graduation student to innovate the deep-frying process at snack corners! Introduction QBTEC is a market leading company with over a hundred employees. QBTEC designs, develops and manufactures custom-fit deep-frying installations: the entire stainless steel walls to deep-fry fries and snacks, used in snack corners. QBTEC has researched an overload of information at employees of snack corners; the users. This cognitive overload causes risk of mistakes during the preparation of customer’s order. Therefore, we want to develop a digital information system to help and stimulate the employees to prepare the order optimally. Project The graduation student needs to research the work processes in snack corners to understand which and how information needs to be displayed, for a seamless fit with the practice of preparing orders. Furthermore, realistic concepts / prototypes need to be developed and evaluated to ensure optimal usage. QBTEC has the serious intention to take the outcome of the project into production. This project will be perfect for you! ... if you are a motivated and independent student. ... if you are enthusiastic about user research and information design / software development. ... if you are willing to create concrete and realistic concepts / prototypes.
