There are two important reasons for wanting to digitise cultural heritage: preservation and access. The most perfect goal of a digitisation project would therefore be to achieve both. We digitise a book - without damaging it of course - and this digital copy allows us to get all the advantages of a digital product: accessable all over the world at any time and fully computer readable (searchable), linked to all kinds of other related material, enriched with metadata, and, what’s more, the original does not have to leave the shelves anymore.
