Goals

This course focuses on design and implementation processes of enhanced publications, particularly on the processes that underly the richer instantiations of this type of publication.

The traditional paradigm of scientific publication is rapidly changing. More and more, contributions to scientific journals are published on-line before becoming issued in print, if they even appear as printed matter. The on-line publication form itself, however, is subject to a growing criticsm as being too static and too much reflecting the old world of printing. Authors want to add extra materials (multimedia) to illustrate or clarify the line of argument, and even further levels of access are desired. Users expect some sort of interactivity when consulting on-line publications. The possibility of adding comments and reviews in a Web 2.0-style is just a first step. One step further is the possibility to consult repositories of research data on which the publications are based, to verify these data and check the validity of the conclusions drawn by the publications' authors. It was in this context that, in January 2010, the famous journal Cell launched the article of the future initiative.

The first experiments with enhanced publications testify to complex design and implementation projects. Questions arise about the publisher and repository environment, the infrastructure of repositories, publication models, services and tools to add data. But also questions about the enhanced publications themselves arise: which components are needed to ensure that enhanced publications offer the level of interactivity needed?

We will explore possibilities to construct a scientific sound environment for the production and publication of enhanced publications.

Literature:
  • A number of scientific articles
  • Documentation of existing environments for enhanced publications
Course form:
  • Students and teams.
    • Each student participates in a small team.
    • The team's assignment consists of analyzing and adequately answering one of the major questions concerning the architecture, development, deployment and/or usability of enhanced publications. The related deliverables comprise:
      • a final paper (max. 6000 words, based on a common template and using the APA Style Guide);
      • as far as applicable: a demo, interview data or other research data, to be supplied as addenda to the paper;
      • interim reporting to the group by means of (a) Powerpoint presentation(s).
    • Each team meets weekly with the lecturers for consultation.
  • Weekly meetings
    • During the meetings the available scientific literature is discussed.
    • A few guest lecturers will be invited to present their current work on enhanced publications.
    • Each team reports about its findings during the weekly meetings.
    • In the final plenary meeting each team presents the conclusions and underlying argumentation of its paper.
  • Attendance to the weekly meetings is mandatory and respecting deadlines is part of the course requirements.
Exam form:
  • Weekly reports (40 %)
  • Team paper, including the addenda, and a final oral presentation (60 %)

The last component must be passed with a grade of 5.5 or higher.

Minimum effort to qualify for 2nd chance exam:Om aan de aanvullende toets te mogen meedoen moet de oorspronkelijke uitslag minstens 4 zijn.
