Contents:Computer games form a prime use of computers these days. In this course we study how to design and develop computer games. Designing computer games is a complicated process involving aspect of psychology, liberal arts, human-computer interaction, artificial intelligence, etc. The emphasis of this course does not lie on the implementation aspects but on the design aspects of games. In particular the following aspects are treated:
  • what is a game
  • how do you design games
  • challenges and rewards
  • game balance
  • storytelling and narrative
  • game worlds
  • interactivity
  • behavior
The course expects considerable involvement of the student, in the form of discussions during the meetings and the four assignments that must be completed (see below).

Course form:A combination of lectures and project work. The lectures are twice a week. Each student has to write a review of a game, design a board game, write and analyse a game story, and implement a game integrating all issues treated in the course, using Game Maker. Software will be provided.
Exam form:The final mark is based on the review (20%), the board game design (25%), the game story (25%) and the final project (30%). There is no final exam. Presence during the lectures is mandatory and will be checked.
Minimum effort to qualify for 2nd chance exam:Om aan de aanvullende toets te mogen meedoen moet de oorspronkelijke uitslag minstens 4 zijn.
