Multimedia retrieval is about the search and delivery of multimedia:
images, sound, video, 3D scenes, and the combination of these.
This course deals with the technical aspect of multimedia retrieval:
techniques, algorithms, and data structures for search query formulation,
media description, matching of descriptions, indexing, visualization of
retrieval results, relevance feedback, etc. |
| Literature: | Documents will be made available. |
| Course form: | A number of lectures, a workshop, an experimentation assignment. |
| Exam form: | A written exam about the lectures (50%), experimentation assignment (50%).
Attendance of the workshop sessions (where the experimentation assignments
are discussed) is mandatory.
|
| Minimum effort to qualify for 2nd chance exam: | Om aan de aanvullende toets te mogen meedoen is ontbreken van ten hoogte 1 toetsactiviteit toegestaan. |
| Description: | During a number of initial lectures, a critical amount of knowledge is
provided about he technical aspect of multimedia retrieval: techniques,
algorithms, and data structures for search query formulation, media
description, matching of descriptions, indexing, visualization of retrieval
results, relevance feedback, etc.
In a workshop, the class has to discuss and analyse one or problems
of contemporary retrieval systems, propose a conceptual solution, and
design an implementation of it. Attendance of the workshop sessions is
mandatory.
In order to experimentally verify various techniques, we will experiment
with SMURF (Similarity-based Multimedia Retrieval Framework), a web-based
experimentation platform for content-based retrieval. It allows to
experiment with different types of multimedia collections, features,
matching algorithms, indexing structures, user interfaces, etc.
See http://give-lab.cs.uu.nl/Smurf/ for a demo of the framework.
