Contents:This seminar is about the application of Computer Science in medical and healthcare domain, which can be labeled as 'medical informatics' but also 'health IT' or 'e-health'. This is an exciting field full of opportunities to explore and learn. The main objective of this seminar is to give you a broad perspective of how informatics can be applied to medical field and how it can improve medical procedures and patients' healthcare and quality of life. This main objective will be reached focusing the seminar in two goals: (1) To learn how informatics is applied in medical and biomedical fields and how it helps to improve prevention, diagnosis and treatment of different diseases and also to health care and wellness, and (2) To research about existing medical informatics solutions and those that are currently under development, and propose and design you own solution to a real medical problem.
Literature:Main material to follow the course will be given during the course. It will be mainly scientific papers and reports available from websites to be announced. More information at the course's website.
Course form:A seminar, as a course form, implies that students actively participate in all activities and will study the concept by themselves. This course includes regular lectures, guest lectures of researchers on the field and workshop sessions. Workshops are dedicated to present and learn about the different informatics solutions that currently exist in the medical field. Finally, students will write a research proposal about a mobile App for healthcare, let them choose a disease or health condition in which to focus their work, search the different solutions that currently exist and design an innovative proposal.
Exam form:The final grade of the course will be mainly formed by the grades of the research proposal about the mobile App for healthcare (50% writing a paper + 20% presentation), the presentation and participation at workshops (20%) and a multiple-choice quiz about the concepts exposed during lectures and workshops (10%). 75% of attendance is required to pass the course. For more details, visit the course's website.
Minimum effort to qualify for 2nd chance exam:Retake is only possible for the paper about the research proposal and the multiple-choice quiz.
*Paper: No retake opportunity if grade is lower than 4.0 or higher than 5.5.
*Quiz: No retake opportunity if grade is lower than 4.0 or higher than 6.0
No retake option for workshops and presentations.
