Contents:This seminar is about the development, implementation and evaluation of IS/IT in the health care domain, which can be labeled as 'medical informatics' but also 'health IT' or 'e-health'. Compared to the previous courses, this years' seminar will focus on serious gaming in the health care domain. This is a relatively new and exciting field that is full of opportunities to explore and evaluate. It is about serious games to help doctors in their clinical work, to help managers to govern their hospitals, to help patients to cope with their diseases. Three knowledge fields are combined in this course: (1) Health care: what are types of health care, what are clinical and organizational processes, what are health care systems? (2) Health care IT: what types of information systems are applied in health care, what IS/IT do doctors, nurses and patient use - or want to use? (3) Serious gaming: which principles of serious gaming can be applied in health? How to develop and design such application? How to evaluate if it works? The three fields will be addressed specifically, but they will also be integrated. After this course, we have gained more knowledge about both the drivers and barriers in medical informatics, and of serious gaming in health in particular.
Literature:Papers published in the main IS/IT and Medical Informatics journals are used, that can be retrieved through the UU Omega library engine. Other materials will be downloadable from websites to be announced.
Course form:A seminar, as a course form, implies that students actively participate in all activities. During the course, each week a meeting is dedicated to literature, papers that have been published in the field of medical informatics and serious gaming. Each student will present and review one or more papers. This contributes to a literature base that all students are expected to use. Each week, a second meeting is dedicated to practice. This includes guest lectures by graduates and professionals in health informatics and serious gaming and visits to companies and events. Finally, students will write a paper that addresses literature and a specific application of serious gaming in the medical domain. This is done in couples. Each week, progress of your paper is monitored, peer review is organized, and presentation of your paper before a professional jury at the end of the seminar is mandatory.
Exam form:Presence at all meetings is registered. Presence at 75% of all meetings or more is the first precondition for participating in the final exam of this seminar. Delivering a satisfactory paper review presentation during the course is the second precondition. Both preconditions need to be satisfied. The final exam consist of delivering a full research paper at the end of the course before the deadline (determining 75% of your grade) and doing the end presentation before the jury determining 25% of your grade), at a fixed date and time (also at the end of the course). Format and criteria of the paper will be published at the start of the course. The paper will be judged and graded by the lecturers.
Minimum effort to qualify for 2nd chance exam:A second change exam is only provided if the end presentation was satisfactory, and the full research paper was delivered within the deadline and graded higher than 4 but lower than 6.
