To be allowed to start with the thesis project, you must have obtained at least 67.5 EC. The contents of the project should be related to a GMT topic. Information for companies is given in our factsheet (in Dutch).Registration
Before starting your thesis project, you need to fill in a research project application form and deliver it to the student desk. Please note that in exceptional cases, its copyright statement may be revised after conferral with the research project coordinator, Iris Caris. The form needs to be signed by you, your project supervisor (UU staff member), the GMT master coordinator (Anja Volk, BBG 4.84), and an examination board member (will be arranged by the student desk). Also ensure that you have included a second examiner (UU staff member).NEW: for students starting their project on or after 1 November 2018: the old paper forms (application form, assessment form) and approvals (signatures) have been replaced by online forms in OSIRIS. Please go to Procedures and Forms for finding the instructions.
On the above page, please also read about the delay protocol. Among other things, it says: 'There will be strict adherence to the ending date as specified (before starting the project) in the 'application form'. If an assessment is reasonably possible on the ending date, the assessment will be made and processed.'
You are advised to work full time (i.e. 5 days per week), which means 40 hours per week. But 4 days per week is also allowed. In that case, please note that your project takes 25% more time to finish. Please be aware that this does not allow working on the side for more than one day per week.Graduation rooms
During your master's thesis project, you're cordially invited to work in the GMT graduation room: BBG 6.79. If BBG 6.79 is full, you can also work in BBG 6.83 until December 1, 2018. You can get the key from the secretary in BBG 4.1.4.External project
You have the possibility to do your thesis project at a company or government institute. In that case, one of the staff members of the department should approve the project and serve as a supervisor. As with all master theses, two supervisors from the department will grade the thesis.
The GMT staff will occasionally send calls for internships by e-mail. In case of a project or internship outside of Utrecht University, please make sure you have filled out the 'daily supervisor' section in the research project application form. If an external party hosts you as a student, you also need to provide a Work Place Agreement.Scope constraints
The topic of the master thesis should lie within the domain of game and media technology. We encourage you to choose a topic that fits your supervisor’s interests and ongoing work closely.Body of the work
This section describes the version for students who started in September 2014 or later, but this information is also relevant for students who started earlier.
The MSc thesis is split into two parts: 15 EC (preparation) and 25 EC (execution). This comprises 3 periods of work (including the GMT colloquium), which is about 7.5 months of work.
The first part comprises 1 period of full-time work. The student will complete (at least) the following deliverables:
After the first part, the supervisors will make a go/no-go decision (so you will not get a grade). This decision is motivated by your project supervisor who will fill out the assessment form part 1. This decision will be entered in Osiris.
For some projects it may be convenient to already start with parts of the second part (e.g. develop theory or implement an algorithm).
The second part comprises 25 EC (2 periods). You will complete (at least) the following items:
The dissemination should be targeted at a broad audience, i.e. people who do not have background in computer science. You can choose between a video, a demo, a poster, or a website. For some inspiration, please look at the examples on the website below. When you are creating a video, it is good to create a voice over. When you are creating a website, please upload the source via the site (so do not link to an external website since they will typically disappear after a few years).
Some advice on writing your MSc thesis and creating the dissemination can be found in the sources below (login with your solisID):
The dissemination needs to be uploaded to the GMT thesis projects site. Note that your supervisor first has to log in and needs to activate your contribution before it is visible.Usual assessment criteria
Your thesis is usually assessed by using the following criteria:
To receive a cum laude, your grade for the second part should be at least 8.5. Please be aware that if you do not finish in time, you cannot get a grade higher than 8.Other useful information
