What kind of business processes are important in our organization, and how can we support these processes using IT? What is the application landscape of our organization, and do we need to update it to improve the speed and flexibility with which we can do business? How can we manage our technical infrastructure to improve access to information for our employees but at the same time minimize security risks?

In this course, you will learn the techniques that allow you to answer these and other questions. The core subject of the course is the modelling and analysis of enterprise-wide architectures (i.e. business process architectures, information architectures, application architectures, technical architectures, combination of architectures, and so on). In addition, we will discuss related topics such as risk management and business process modelling.

After this course you should:

  • Know about the main frameworks, modelling techniques and analysis techniques for Enterprise Architecture, and be able to effectively use them to analyze a real organization.
  • Be able to clearly communicate a complex architecture through reports and oral presentation.
  • Know about topics related to Enterprise Architecture such as service oriented architectures, risk management, architectural maturity and compliance.
  • Be able to explain how Enterprise Architecture can improve business-IT alignment.


A large part of the course is based on Enterprise Architecture at Work (3rd ed.), by Marc Lankhorst et al. (chapters 1-8). An electronic version of the book can be downloaded from the Utrecht University library (UU library access needed).

In addition to the book, we will also discuss various articles which will be made available on the website of the course.

Course form:

The course consists of lectures, lab sessions and a company assignment. The lectures provide the necessary theoretical background, and some guest lecturers will be invited to show how real business problems can be tackled using Enterprise Architecture.

Analysing enterprises is also a very practical endeavour, and practical assignments and lab sessions are therefore an important part of the course. There are two main types of assignment.

  • For the company assignment, you will have to analyse the architecture of a company in groups of two. There are two deliverables for this assignment, a written report and a poster presentation.
  • The lab assignments will be handed out during the respective lab or workshop sessions, and have to be handed in before their deadlines. You can perform these assignments in the same pairs as the company assignment.

Minimum effort to qualify for 2nd chance exam:

There will be one re-exam in week 27. You are only admitted to the re-exam if your final course grade is between 4.0 and 5.5.

  • It is not possible to re-take the lab assignments.
  • It is not possible to re-take the company assignment.


Modeling, architectural frameworks, different types of architectures, governance. You must have completed MSO (Modelleren en systeemontwikkeling; in English: Modeling and system development) or an equivalent course in order to appreciate the modeling techniques. Furthermore, a small part of the content presented in the lectures may have been covered by SMOI or IOBM, but for EAR there is no need to have completed these courses.
