|Inhoud:||In this course we will cover cognitive processes (such as perceiving and processing information, and storing and using it), emotions, and their interrelationship. Focus is on the role of these phenomena in the design and use of ICT.
Traditionally, cognition and emotion are treated separately in research literature. However, the mutual dependence of emotions and cognitive processes is obvious, and clearly relevant for the design and evaluation of many computer applications: e.g., systems that help users making decisions in stressful situations, training applications in which virtual characters show emotions, and games that are entertaining and educational. In common applications emotions and cognitive processes of the user are also involved: when an application provides too much or too little information, the user will make errors and get frustrated. A well-designed application, on the contrary, affords the user a pleasant working experience.
The course is relevant for students interested in human-computer interaction and in (serious) games and training applications.
Knowledge and understanding of
- important cognitive processes, the most common models of human emotion, and related notions such as engagement, motivation, and (social) presence;
- evaluation of the cognitive and emotional response of ICT users;
- perspectives such as Affective Computing and Emotional Design;
- and the ability to apply this knowledge in the design and evaluation of various kinds of applications.
