Inhoud:The course will introduce students to game design in a broad sense. There are three aspects covered:
  1. Analyzing game design. Reasoning about game design: "What is the effect of a certain design decision on the experience of the game?" And also reasoning on a fundamental level: "What are games and what types of experiences can be created?" You will learn terminology and theories, and apply these in the second and third assignment and the exam.
  2. The role of the game designer. Executing tasks of the game designer in a game development team such as: communicating game ideas, creating design decisions, and properly evaluating a prototype. You will practise these skills in the first and second assignment.
  3. Knowledge about game design and the game development world. Knowing a game designer's vocabulary is important to properly communicate in a development team. Having knowledge about the game development world and the societal context is essential for you to manoeuver in the game industry. You will have to learn the material of each lecture which is assessed in the final exam.
Note that active participation is required due to the high number of deadlines and their short term. There is no prerequisite knowledge, but experience in creating games (or game prototypes) is helpful because of Assignment 2.

All course material is in English, while the verbal language is Dutch. Student work can be done in either Dutch or English.

Several online or downloadable articles will be used as literature. These are provided through the course website. There is no mandatory book, although there are optional books suggested on the course website.
Werkvorm:There is a series of lectures (including guest lectures) which contain the content for the exam. There is a mini-test after each lecture to test your understanding. There are three practical assignments.
Toetsvorm:The final grade depends on three assignments (counting for 10%, 30% and 30% respectively), one exam (20%), and mini-tests after each lecture (10%). For more detail on the grading, refer to the course website.
Inspanningsverplichting voor aanvullende toets:Om aan de aanvullende toets te mogen meedoen moet de oorspronkelijke uitslag minstens 4 zijn.
Beschrijving:Subjects include: history, role of the game designer, theory behind games, challenge based game design, balance and level design, narrative design, indie game design, serious game design, game development landscape, societal context of games and game analysis.
