Contents:Annually, the MBI program organizes a summerschool in the form of a scientific study trip to an international destination. Each year a different theme in the area of Business Informatics is chosen that is studied in an international context. Also a destination is decided based on the theme and the interests of the participating students.

The learning objectives of this course are:

  • Providing of insight and skills into international collaboration in the field of business informatics;
  • Being able to investigate and report on a subject within the theme of the summerschool;
  • Being able to organize collaboratively an international scientific trip and event;
  • Being able to work with people from different origins with other cultures.

This year the summerschool has formed two teams with destination Bangladesh and USA , and the theme is Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) . The students will organize a scientific trip to various organizations in Bangladesh and the Netherlands, where we will study the practices of BPO. The website of the 2012 summerschool.

Previous summerschools

In 2008 the theme of the summerschool was Distributed Product Software Development, and the countries visited were Czech Republic, Hungary, Romania, and Serbia. The website of the 2008 summerschool.

In 2010 the theme was Collaboration in Outsourcing, and we went to India (New Delhi, Hyderabad, and Bangalore). The book resulting from the summerschool will be published as: Collaboration in Outsourcing: A Journey to Quality by Sjaak Brinkkemper and Slinger Jansen, Palgrave Macmillan, Series on Technology, Work and Globalization, 2012. In 2011 the theme was Distributed Knowledge Management, and the trip was scheduled to Germany, Switzerland and Austria. However, due to the financial situation we were unable to secure funding. The website of the 2011 summerschool.

Course form:The students will organize the trip together with the lecturers. The meetings of the course and trip preparation will be during the whole academic year with emphasis on period 3 and 4.

Annually, the trip is announced during the Introduction to MBI course. Interested students are invited to take the lead in organizing the trip, proposing a theme and a destination country. Students are selected for participation based on a motivation letter and their MSc study results so far. Experience shows that a group of about 12 students is the maximum size to have a smooth organization.

The students prepare the trip in teams of 4, and are required to perform one of the defined tasks in the trip organization, such as travel, finance, local transport, accomodation, touristic trips, etc. Each team is required to find financial support for the trip.

Each student selects a topic within the theme of the summerschool, for which a scientific overview chapter is to be written for the book that will be edited based on the contributions of the students and lecturers. Before the trip a draft paper is written based on a literature review and case studies in Europe. During the trip field studies contribute to the contents of the paper. After the trip the paper is extensively reviewed by the lecturers and the students, in order to be finalized for inclusion in the book.

The summerschool is concluded by a public symposium on theme of the summerschool, usually being held in October or November. At the symposium the resulting summerschool book is formally presented.

Exam form:A paper about a topic related to the theme of the summerschool is to be written. There is no exam.

During the preparations two presentations have to be given. The draft of the paper has to be completed before the trip, and the final paper is due after the trip, for which exact dates will be supplied.

The grading is as follows:

  • First topic presentation: 10%
  • Second topic presentation: 10%
  • Draft paper: 30%
  • Final paper: 25%
  • Participation and organization: 25%
Failure to participate in the organizational meetings and preparations will also result in failure for the course.

Minimum effort to qualify for 2nd chance exam:Om aan de aanvullende toets te mogen meedoen moet de oorspronkelijke uitslag minstens 4 zijn.
