Management of computation focuses on the efficient use of the huge potential computational power on the Web. There are hundreds of millions computers around the world connected to the Internet. Most of them are idle much of the time. Internet computing seeks to exploit otherwise idle workstations and PCs to create powerful distributed computing systems with global reach and supercomputer capabilities [foster00internet].
The seminar addresses the following components:
- Global computing: special global architectures are necessary to support global distributed computing and resource sharing.
- Java-based global computing: the physical structure of a global network has drastic consequences for programming. Java offers the basic infrastructure needed to integrate computers connected to the Internet into a seamless distributed computational resource.
- Grid technology: Grid technologies provide protocols, services, and software development kits needed to enable flexible, controlled resource sharing on a large scale. The Web is an excellent platform to exploit Grid technologies.
