Assignment 6: Level design

The sixth assignment is to create one of the levels for you final game. The educational goal is that you understand how a level should be constructed and organized.

Description

In this assignment you must design a level. This level should be part of the final game.

You should write a document (max 500 words) describing the level, and how it will be used in the game. This document should clearly state why the level is constructed the way it is, and how this level influences the difficulty level and learning curve.

Procedure

First develop a rough idea of the entire game world. Then, determine what part of the story is used in this level. You then go and find a way of fitting the story into the game world. You select which part of the game world is suited for the level. Finally, you finalize the level by further developing those parts of the game world that you selected. This involves placing objects, items, characters, paths, and partial dialogs into the level design.

Please try to fit this level within the existing storyline, concept and topic from the previous assignments.

Handing in the assignment

Your finished level design should consist of the following:

  • A one-page drawing or schematic depiction of the level.
  • A description of how this level is used in the game (max 500 words).

Please make sure that the documents look very nice. Handing in a simple text file (ascii) is not permitted.

The documents you hand in should be in the PDF file format.

You can write it either in Dutch or in English.

If there are any questions or problem regarding the submission please contact Arno Kamphuis (arnok@cs.uu.nl).

The two documents that are required should all be in a separate PDF file. They should be submitted before the deadline using the Submit system.

Judging

The mark for your level design will primarily be based on the following elements:

  • Level design (30 points). Is there a clear construction of the level? Does it reflect the basic design criteria?
  • Use in the game (30 points). Is there a clear vision on how this level can be used in the game?
  • Why this design (15 points). Is it clearly shown why the level is constructed as it is?
  • Learning curve/difficulty level (15 points). Is there insight in how this level design influences the learning curve and difficulty level?
  • Design of the document (10 points). Does the document look nice?

We will not judge documents which

  • have more than the stated number of words for each element
  • are handed in after the deadline
  • contain more than 2 spelling/grammar errors per 500 words
  • are in plain text
  • are not in the PDF file format
