Assignment 2: Create five concepts

The second assignment is to create five different concepts for an Adventure or RPG game. The educational goal is to show that in the beginning of the development of a game the ideas should be as wide (or wild) as possible. Later on in the game development you will restrict this broad concept into a more detailed game design.

Description

You will develop five different concepts. The aim is that you describe these concepts using an executive summary. This executive summary includes (but is not limited to) the following topics:

  • Concept Title: The title of the game.
  • Player Experience: This describes the experience the player will endure. Will the player undergo fear or happiness? Is excitement the main experience, or something else?
  • Game mechanics: How does the game work? What are the rules?
  • Play mechanics: What can you do in the game? E.g. can you fly, jump, drive, shoot, etc.?
  • Story & Theme: A very short indication of a story or theme.
  • Visual Style: What will the graphical style be? Will it be realistic, cartoon, etc.?
  • References: Include some references to existing (well-known) literature, games and movies to show to the reader some familiar material.

Procedure

First, think of a concept. Then, try to describe all the points in the executive summary. Perform this process five times. Please try to get very different concepts. Finally, write the executive summary for all five concepts.

Handing in the assignment

Every executive summary should not consist of more than 250 words!

This assignment should be handed in along with the results of assignment 3.

Please make sure that the documents look very nice. Handing in a simple text file (ascii) is not permitted.

You can write it either in Dutch or in English.

If there are any questions or problem regarding the submission please contact Arno Kamphuis (arnok@cs.uu.nl).

Judging

The mark for your executive summaries will primarily be based on the following elements:

  • Are all points described for all five concepts? (40 points)
  • Are the five concepts reasonable? (10 points)
  • Are the five concepts different? (40 points)
  • Design of the documents (10 points). You get 10 points for the design of the documents.

We will not judge documents which

  • have more than the stated number of words for each element
  • are handed in after the deadline
  • contain more than 2 spelling/grammar errors per 500 words
  • are in plain text
  • are not in the PDF file format
