About the paper
Every participant makes a choice between writing a paper and doing an exercise. (In some cases, participants may have individual appointments.) As you may have noticed, the field of database technology is very large. Our course covered only the classical basics and some specific topics. One of the goals of writing a paper is to give participants the opportunity to investigate other topics of interest related to database architecture.
About writing the paper
The expected size is 3200 words (~ 8 pages). In writing this paper, you are supposed to show the following skills. You are able to search relevant material related to a specific topic. You are able to understand this material and reflect on it critically. You are able to develop a personal view based on the combined information from several sources. You are able to express this view in a short paper.
You can find a lot of information on the web about writing a scientific paper, for instance here. Note that the structure of your paper is a bit different, because you do not present new results (I presume), but give an overview instead. Don't skip the advices with respect to referencing. Important: also take a look at these slides.
Deadline for submission is friday July 9, 17:00, by email, pdf-format. Please let me know in advance by email which topic you choose. It is allowed to share a topic with other participants. I will inform you when this is the case, so you might focus on separate subtopics.
When searching for information related to specific topics on the web, people tend to ignore some classical sources: the conference proceedings. Important conferences on database technology are: VLDB, SIGMOD/PODS, ICDE, DEXA, EDBT. In most cases, you have access to the papers with an IP-number related to cs.uu.nl.
