    <title>Thunderstorms in my computer: the effect of visual dynamics and sounds in a 3D environment</title>
    <abstract>
      <p xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">
        In an experimental setup, we assessed the effects of adding dynamic visual elements and
        sounds to a levee patroller training game. We measured the effects on the appraisal of the
        environment and weather conditions, the engagement of the users, and their performance,
        using questionnaires as well as physiological measures (facial muscle tension). Results
        show that the combination of visual dynamics and sounds can effectively be used to influence
        the affective qualities or ambience of the environment, but that the addition of these
        elements requires careful design and testing to prevent undesirable side effects. Moderate
        effects on the engagement of the participants were found, which will also be discussed in
        this colloquium.
