Grading

Grading procedure

The final grade consists of a weighted average of all the assignments to be computed as follows

subject to the condition that none of the grades is lower than 4.0 You have passed the course if the average is 5.5 or higher.

For the written assignments, please do not think that handing in all the correct answers gives you the best possible grade: I shall also look at your argumentation, the elegance of your computations and proofs, clarity and so on.

What if you did not pass the course?

You are allowed to perform one additional task to improve an insufficient mark (weight at most 40 percent). This may be to improve your average if it is lower than 5.5, or in case you have one mark lower than 4.0 (or both). In both cases, you should inform the lecturer of your intentions with respect to doing extra work by e-mailing him after which he will make clear what the extra work consists of and when you have to deliver your results. The amount of work he gives you is determined by the what you need to pass the course.

If more than one of your grades is lower than 4.0, you are not allowed to pass the course this year and need to take it again next year. The same applies if obtaining a grade of 10 for a forty percent additional assignment would not allow you to pass the course, because in that case it does not help to do the additional task.
