Using the IBM WebExplorer

The IBM WebExplorer is a http client, like NCSA Mosaic (available for X11, Windows and Mac) or the Netscape Navigator (available for X11, Win/Win32, Mac). The IBM WebExplorer supports all markup in the HTML/2.0 standard, including forms, ISO-Latin-1 fonts, etc. And the IBM WebExplorer supports HTTP/1.0, including GET and POST access methods and MIME headers.

To use all the functions of the IBM WebExplorer, the MultiMedia Viewer/2, included with the OS/2 Warp BonusPak has to be installed as well. The IBM WebExplorer uses the capabilities of the MultiMedia Viewer/2 to display it's graphics and output it's sounds. The Internet Access Kit as found in the OS/2 Warp v3 Red Box (without WINOS2) does not include IBM WebExplorer. To obtain the IBM WebExplorer you can use Retrieve Software Updates or you can ftp to the Advantis ftp site. The current stable release is v1.01 and the current Beta is v950525. OS/2 Warp v3 FullPak (Blue Box) includes IBM WebExplorer v1.00 in it's IAK. And OS/2 Warp Connect (LAN Client) includes IBM WebExplorer v1.01 in it's IAK.

The IBM WebExplorer needs to be setup to use the appropriate servers (see figure above) and viewers. Most of the viewers used by the IBM WebExplorer are from the MultiMedia Viewer/2. However some data formats, for instance, PostScript (*.PS) do not have a viewer installed. OS/2 Warp doesn't support these format's out of the box. Third patry viewers, like GhostScript/2, will have to be used. The respective viewer can be entered in the WebExplorer and WebExplorer will use that viewer, when it encounters a data format of that type.

WebExplorer Tip

Note: Only use this option if you have the hardware to back it up. Using more threads will create a heavier load on your connection and on your system.

The IBM WebExplorer uses a number of threads to load images and documents simultaneously across the net. You can increase that number of threads via a parameter. The default for the parameter is 4.

Example:
explore.exe -t 8

In the example above the WebExplorer is started with 8 threads for document streaming. On good connections, this may boost your performance.
